Boris Johnson says girls' education is key to ending poverty

Boris Johnson says it is his "firm belief" that improving girls' education in developing countries is the best way to "keep communities out of poverty."

The Prime Minister has announced MP Helen Grant as a special envoy to help girls' education.

It is hoped that this year will be one of the key themes of the G7 group of big industrialized countries.

"It can change the destiny of individuals, not just women and girls, but of communities and nations," she said.

Even before the epidemic, millions of children in developing countries had no access to school - and girls from disadvantaged families were particularly at risk for not attending school. Be it through poverty or prejudice.

The Kovid epidemic has further hampered education, with nearly 1.6 billion children around the world facing school closures.
